How to choose the main image for your Meta and Google ads

Show a different product photo in your ads: set an Adwisely Ad Image, or change the main image in Shopify.

Written by Paul

This article shows how to make your ads use a different photo than your store.

For example, your product page keeps a clean product photo (A), while your Facebook, Instagram and Google ads show a lifestyle photo of the same product (B).

You can change the ad image in two ways:

  • Option 1, ads only: pick an Ad Image. Your store does not change.

  • Option 2, ads and store: change the product's main image in Shopify.

Option 1: an image for your ads only

1. Create the Ad Image field (once per store)

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects > Products.

Click Add definition and fill it in exactly like this:

  • Name: Adwisely Ad Image

  • Namespace and key: adwisely.ad_image (click the grey text under the name to edit it)

  • Type: Image (File), with One selected

Click Save.

2. Choose the ad image for a product

Open the product and scroll down to Product metafields. Click the Adwisely Ad Image field, then Select image.

Choose an image, or click Add files to upload a new one. Click Done, then Save.

Good to know:

  • The image is used for all variants of the product.

  • To go back to the usual image, click Clear in the field and save.

  • Works on Meta, and on Google when your Google feed comes from Merchant Center. Not sure about your store? Ask us in chat.

Option 2: change the main image in Shopify

Your ads and your store both show the new image. This works for every store.

Open the product. In Media, drag the photo you want into the first place, then click Save.

Variants with their own image: ads show the variant's image instead. Change it in Variants by clicking the image next to the variant.

When will my ads change?

  • Meta: within a few hours, up to 24 hours.

  • Google: 1 to 2 days.

You don't need to change anything in Adwisely.

Tip: Google rejects main images with text, prices, watermarks or borders. Use a clean product photo.
